UPDATE: ASUU To Decide On Nation Wide Strike This Weekend

There is a report reaching us stating that the leadership of the Academic Staff Union of Universities, [ASUU] will hold a crucial meeting this weekend to determine if the union will proceed on a nation wide strike action.

ASUU had earlier asked all its branches in the various universities to conduct referendum of members to decide whether or not a nationwide strike should be held over its demands.

The final decision on the strike is expected to be made after a review of the referendum conducted by the chapters.

An earlier deadline given by ASUU to the federal government to meet its demands ended today (Friday).

The scheduled meeting where ASUU will take its final decision starts today (Friday) and ends on Sunday (August 13) in Abuja.

ASUU major demands include issues concerning the welfare of members as well as funding of universities among others. The Union and the federal government have been negotiating these demands since November 2016.

Report reaching us has it that the Vice Chancellor (VC) of the University of Calabar, Calabar (Unical), Prof. Zana Akapgu has been awarded “Best Performing” VC in Nigeria in the last one year by a London based news platform, ‘The Nigerian’ and the ‘Nigeria Print Journalism Magazine’.

It was gathered that the Vice Chancellor was selected after a critical evaluation of his achievements since he assumed office.

The VC is to be conferred with the award of the “Best Education Leadership Icon” on August 25th in London, United Kingdom.

The award was in recognition of the VC’s “immense contributions to educational development and nation building through transparent and inclusive leadership at the University of Calabar”.

UPDATES: Abia Emerges Best In WAEC 2017 May/June Results - See The Top Ten States
Report has emerged that Abia State recorded the best performance in the recently released 2017 WAEC May/June SCCE results.

According to the report, Abia State presented 51,839 candidates for 2017 May/June WASSCE. 81.54% of the candidates obtained five credits with English Language and Mathematics which made the state the best in terms of performance.

Rivers, Edo, Imo, Bayelsa finished second, third, fourth and fifth respectively behind Abia.

Anambra, Lagos, Taraba, Enugu and Delta occupied the sixth to tenth position in that order.

While it can be said that the South South and South East States dominated the top ten, it can be said also that Taraba State recorded a major improvement in their students’ performance, rising from 21st position last year to 8th position this year.

The winner receives £15,000, an engraved Montblanc Meisterstück pen, and an Etisalat-sponsored fellowship at the University of East Anglia, where he or she will be mentored by Professor Giles Foden, author of The Last King of Scotland’. The winner and the two runners-up also participate in a multi-city book tour sponsored by Etisalat. Etisalat purchases 1,000 copies of each of the shortlisted titles for distribution to schools, libraries and book clubs across the African continent.

Alongside the Prize for Literature is the Flash Fiction Award, an online-based competition open to all African writers of unpublished short stories of no more than 300 words. The winner of the Flash Fiction Award receives £1,000 and a high-end device, while the two runners-up for the Flash Fiction Award receive £500 each in addition to high-end devices.

  • Submissions will only be accepted from publishing houses
  • All books entered should have a registered ISBN number or equivalent.
  • Entries by new writers must be published within the last 24 months before submission
  • Entries for fiction books will be submitted by publishers who have published a minimum of three (3) authors.
  • Publisher should have been a registered business (with certificate of incorporation as a publisher) for minimum of three years
  • Each publisher will be allowed to enter a maximum of three (3) books – however books maybe called in by the judges.
  • Each entry will be required to be accompanied by Seven (7) copies of the book being entered along with acceptance of publicity terms.
  • The Etisalat Prize for Literature is not open to employees of any organisation under Emirates Telecommunications Corporation with branded trade name Etisalat.
